Is CBD good for Pets?

Like hemp, our beloved canine and feline friends have lived with us for nearly 12,000 years. We have had a long symbiotic relationship with these animals. Throughout human history, cats have helped keep pests away from our homes, while dogs have helped people hunt game and protect us from unexpected dangers of early, modern-human life. In return for their devotion, we have provided them with food, shelter and companionship.

Today, dogs and cats remain loyal. Our four-legged family members, who like children, only want inclusion and demand love. Though unlike us humans, our furry friends age quickly and encounter issues like osteoarthritis, cancer and even anxiety due to a variety of unknown or known causes like loud fireworks or intense thunderstorms.

CBD Pet Product Studies

CBD pet products provide a natural, organic way to help your pet manage their ailments, and few studies show cannabidiol’s (CBD) effectiveness in treating some illnesses. Studies that exist primarily showcase CBD treatments in dogs.

Osteoarthritis

A team of researchers from Cornell University, Colorado State University and Metzger Animal Hospital conducted a randomized placebo-controlled, veterinarian and owner-blind study to determine oral CBD pharmacokinetics, safety and pain-relieving efficacy in 22 dogs with clinically confirmed osteoarthritis. Although only 16 dogs completed the trial; Researchers removed the other dogs due to physical and psychological complications.

Of the 16 dogs that remained, each received two treatments of either two or eight milligrams of CBD oil or placebo oil every 12 hours that lasted for four weeks, each followed by a two-week “washout” period. The results show that the CBD treatment caused a significant decrease in pain associated with osteoarthritis and an increase in activity levels in 80 percent of participants. Dog owners reported no side effects.

Seizures

Research published in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association found that nine dogs in the CBD control group had reduced frequency of seizures due to idiopathic epilepsy. The dogs were given 2.5 mg of CBD infused oil twice daily for 12 weeks in addition to their regular antiepileptic treatments.

CBD Cat Research

A study published in the National Institutes of Health database shows that cats can tolerate CBD doses for long periods. Eight cats were orally given 2 mg of CBD twice daily for 12 weeks. Researchers concluded that based on complete blood count and biochemistry values, cannabidiol was relatively safe for cats in their study. Further research is necessary for CBD osteoarthritis treatments in cats.

There is a lack of research proving CBD’s effectiveness to treat illnesses in cats, but what studies do exist show that CBD is well-tolerated in both canines and felines.

How Can CBD Help My Pet?

Although there is a lack of research, many pet owners in the United States give their pets CBD to treat health problems. Whether age-related or not, here are some potential illnesses or health complications CBD can help improve:

  • Arthritis
  • Seizures and Epilepsy
  • Anxiety
  • Pain
  • Cancer
  • Nausea
  • Inflammation

Are There Any Side Effects?

If you’ve decided that natural CBD alternatives are right for your cat or dog, there are some side effects you should know. Don’t worry; The known effects are minor:

  • Drowsiness: Depending on how much CBD you give your pet, they might experience tiredness that may be seen as general relaxation. *Note* – CBD will NOT cause a “high” or intoxication.

  • Dry Mouth: Both human users and pet owners note that CBD can cause decreased saliva production observed in pets. Make sure your pet has access to potable water when they want it.

  • Low Blood Pressure: The American Kennel Clubstates that CBD has been known to cause a temporary drop in blood pressure in dogs when taken at high doses. CBD is likely to produce the same reaction in cats.

Overall, and based on the reviewed research, CBD is a potentially effective safe treatment for many health complications in cats and dogs.

How Much CBD Should I Give My Pet?

If you have never given your pet CBD pet products, there are two primary types you can provide them. There’s common CBD oil like Pharma Hemp’s CBD pet tinctures and pet edibles like Pharma Hemp’s CBD Dog Biscuits. Each delivery method provides your pet with beneficial CBD to help them relax and return to their favorite activities – like chasing mice in the kitchen or cars around the neighborhood.

It’s best to begin by giving your pet small doses of CBD and watch how they react. Start by giving your companion 1-2 mg of CBD depending on their body weight and purpose for treatment.

One 1 ml serving of Pharma Hemp’s pet tincture contains 4 mg of CBD. You can easily adjust the dose using the tincture dropper. Likewise, each Pharma Hemp Dog Biscuit contains 4 mg of CBD that can be easily broken into smaller servings for small dogs.

Final Thoughts

As we reintroduce ourselves and our pets to CBD’s potential, we begin to realize just how amazing a naturally occurring organic treatment can be. Though little studies exist, what research shows is that CBD pet products provide relief for some of our pets’ ailments. Based on available evidence, it’s safe to say that you can slowly begin to incorporate CBD into your pet’s health and wellness plan.
